The Shire of Calliope is located on the Central Queensland coastline, approximately 550km north of Brisbane by road and surrounds the city of Gladstone.  The Shire comprises a diversity of natural environments, from the majestic Kroombit Tops Range in the west to the Heron group of islands on the Great Barrier Reef to the east.

Calliope Shire has grown to become a region of diverse contrasts, and includes the whole of the catchment of the Calliope River and over 90% of the catchment of the Boyne River; the Capricorn group of islands (most notably Heron Island and a major portion of Curtis Island).  The Shire of Calliope also includes the major urban centres of Tannum Sands, Boyne Island, Benaraby & surrounds, Calliope township & surrounds, as well as the rural centres of Mount Larcom, Ambrose, Raglan, Yarwun, Nagoorin, Ubobo, Builyan & Many Peaks.

CLIMATE Calliope Shire has a sub-tropical, sub-humid climate (go to Bureau of Meteorology site) with an average rainfall of 890mm per year.  The average air temperature is 27 degrees with summer and winter averages between 31 and 22 degrees respectively.  Prevailing winds are from the south-east and the area is within the tropical cyclone belt.

HISTORY  Named after a British battleship by his Excellency Sir Charles Fitzroy in 1854, Calliope soon became the name of the main township.  Following the proclamation of the Government Gazette on the 11th November 1879, the Calliope Divisional Board (Calliope Shire Council) was formed.
