Where is Calliope Shire?
NUMBER: 403
TITLE: ROADSIDE MEMORIALS
SUB SECTION: ACTS AND LOCAL LAWS
OBJECT: To outline Council's position with respect to Roadside Memorials
SCOPE: All Council controlled roads in the Shire

BACKGROUND

Council is sensitive to the grieving process of those that lose loved ones to roadside accidents.  It is acknowledged that in some instances, the erection of roadside memorials can assist people in the grieving process.

It is also acknowledged that there are some members of the community that do become distressed by the constant reminder of the death of a person, through roadside memorials.

Other considerations include:-

  • The primary purpose of the road network is the safe and efficient movement of traffic.
  • Some accidents sites are in areas of limited visibility, or on sections of road where it is difficult for a vehicle to safely park.
  • Roadside memorials can be distracting, but they can also raise awareness of the potential for road accidents.
  • Roadside memorials can interfere with road maintenance activities.

Council has attempted to balance these considerations through this policy.

DIRECTION:         Council offers no objection to the short term placement (up to 6 months) of a simple white cross at a fatal roadside accident site, but discourages the laying of floral tributes or other items that have the potential to distract drivers and that require ongoing servicing, as Council considers that this has the potential to place members of the public at risk.
